A Scratchboard (also called SCRAPERBOARD/CLAYBOARD) is done on a clay-coated board covered with black India ink, which is then drawn on with tools to scraped or scratched away the ink and expose the clay.
Scratch board, is a drawing/design medium using line, marks and texture in a very tactile way. It is usually a black and white medium, but color can be added with great effect. The board itself is the support on which is placed a very thin veneer of fine white clay coating its surface. A layer of India ink coats this clay surface or parts of it.
